How To Play Piano – My Story
No matter what you learn, you’re always a beginner at some stage…
When learning anything in life, you always start off as a beginner. You get to know the basics, you start to get a feel for what you’re doing, you gain confidence and then you find yourself with a skill you never thought you’d have. More often than not, you pick up skills unconsciously and without any effort required. Breaking past the beginner’s barrier however, can often seem quite daunting. Having the resources to break past these barriers is the key and can often prove to be priceless. Just look at getting a new job, it all seems so hard in the beginning, but with the use of resources, training programs and other employees you become a professional in no time, and you wonder what you were so worried about in the first place. Lets look at when I learned how to play piano as a beginner.
When I Learned How To Play Piano
When I started learning how to play piano at the tender age of eight, I thought that knowing how to play piano was the “cool thing to do” because my friends were playing it, but boy was I nervous in the beginning. For a little girl, going into a room with a big old piano was scary. There were heaps of ‘buttons’ that made noise, I had things down the bottom that I had to use for my feet, I had paper in front of me with different squiggly lines and I was supposed to co-ordinate all these hand and feet movements at once. I almost ran out of the room screaming – I thought it was too hard to learn how to play piano. But then I thought that I would never be cool until I learnt how to play piano so I dove in, did the work and never looked back. So for years I used to turn up to my lessons, I practiced every week at home and finally I started to learn songs and participated in piano ‘exams’ so I could improve my piano grade. I finally got to a point where I had learned how to play piano and it was never as hard as I had once thought.
I loved learning, but as I grew up I realised I wasn’t playing songs that I wanted to play, they were always boring ones that no one wanted to listen to. I believe that’s why I lost my passion to play. When I look back at how long I was playing for, it must have cost my mother thousands of dollars for me to learn how to play piano. It was certainly a lot more expensive back then than it is now, especially with all the fabulous piano programs that exist. Ever since, I have played piano on random occasions, at events, whenever I found a free keyboard or piano, it really gave me so much joy to use the skills I had learned as a child and I really did love to play piano but I had never learned songs I had wanted to learn.
I really wish that I had the opportunity to learn the songs I wanted to learn and learn the popular songs on the radio. Just as Greyson Michael Chances demonstrates by playing a popular song by Lady Gaga at a school performance. Especially as a kid, with such a short attention span – these days the attention span of a child is much less – however, if I had of been entertained and enjoyed the learning process then, I know I would have stuck with it. If I had access to the kinds of piano programs that exist today that keep things fun and interesting, that demonstrate things with videos and teach you the most popular all time great and popular songs (instead of just playing Mary had a little lamb for years) then who knows the types of skills I would have now.
